Hyperthyroid: Iodide Compounds

Why is Iodide Compound given to patient's pre-operatively?

Answer:To decrease vascularity and prevent bleeding.
Example: Potassium Iodide, Lugol's solution, SSKI
Teaching: Take with milk, juice, and use of straw. Can cause staining of teeth.
